What are you looking for?

Howdy!

I’m Laura, the needlepoint designer behind Needlemouth Studio, based in Austin, Texas.

After closing the chapter of my former career as a high school English teacher, I found myself searching for paths and hobbies that fueled my creativity and tapped into my love of lifelong learning. One summer, in a very Goldilocks fashion, I tried out three different art classes: collage, pottery, and needlepoint. I think you know which one stuck.

Once I began stitching, though I certainly was not at a loss for canvases for my stash, I kept imagining additional ideas I would love to stitch. When I searched around, I was surprised to see certain pop culture moments, favorite places, or witty phrases hadn’t yet found their way onto a needlepoint canvas. I think you can guess what happened next.

When I’m not stitching, I love to read, keep my thumb green, escape to the hill country with my family, yap on the couch with friends, go on architectural home tours, play mahjong, and spend time with my labradoodle, Dolly.

What is a needlemouth?

The term needlemouth is an homage to my late grandmother, Mamaw, who was an avid sewer and needlepointer.

When I’d watch her stitch, I was always aghast when she would rest her needle in her mouth in between tasks. I even made her an illustrated warning to help deter this habit.

Sure enough, I am now frequently caught with a needle in my mouth, and I bet you have also occasionally been a needlemouth, too!
